2018 Racing Lunch Results

Another great day and another record result topping off a wonderful 2018 for the Ruben Centre!

We are delighted to announce that our 2018 Racing Lunch raised over $183,000 - a record amount for a Racing Lunch - meaning the total raised by this Group in 2018 now exceeds $550,000!

The MCC Members’ Dining Room was again full of our Members, Sponsors and other guests on 30 October, all there to hear racing luminaries such as Wayne Hawkes, Rupert Legh, Jim Cassidy, new MRC Chairman, Peter LeGrand and the VRC’s ‘Keeper of the Cup’, Joe McGrath chat with our legendary MC, Leon Wiegard.

There were plenty of memorable moments as Wayne and Rupert shared the backdrop to Chautauqua’s fantastic come from behind win in the Chairman’s Sprint (Group 1) in Hong Kong, and Jim Cassidy revisited his Cup-winning rides on Kiwi and Might and Power – including the phone call from ‘KP’ on the eve of the 1997 Melbourne Cup!

We were also privileged to hear from Jodie Sangster, a senior IBM executive, about her first visit to The Ruben Centre and its extraordinary impact on both the local community and visitors like herself. Jodie has since joined the Board of the Edmund Rice Foundation inspired, like all of us, by the way the team at Ruben continues to find new ways to support the children and families of the Mukuru Slum including:

  • Educating almost 3,000 children (and providing what is for many their only meal of the day)

  • Providing over 120,000 services through the Medical Clinic (which, thanks to our Group’s efforts this year, now boasts both a birthing unit and ambulance)

  • Delivering 30 community programs ranging from special needs education at the Kurt Fearnley Centre to vocational training to Mukuru’s own FM radio station
